Excerpt from Night of the Loving Dead

The rumors said the walls bled, which was enough to intrigue Madeline. She’d never seen anything like that, and if there was even a slight chance to see something like that, she was in. Most of the time, their little band of paranormal researchers spent their time stumbling around in the dark.
Nothing popped out of the inky blackness when they searched, unless she counted the occasional startled and unhappy raccoon. On really unlucky days, they might scare a skunk… not an experience she wanted to repeat.
No noises she couldn’t explain, even if Drew—her recent ex, and the leader of their misfit bunch—liked to romanticize everything. Every creak of old wood, every moan of wind through cracked windows, every inexplicable orb of light in their pictures were proof to him of life beyond the grave.
Madeline took a bit more convincing.
Her best friend, Layla, insisted that her disbelief was reason enough to leave the society and stop wandering around in the middle of the night seeking proof of the unknown, but Madeline didn’t see it that way. She went ghost hunting with the society because she wanted there to be something more. There had to be. Something other than waking up to go to work and paying bills. Something more than growing old and facing death. Something special. Something magical.
Besides, Madeline suffered from insomnia since she was a kid, so it wasn’t like she had something better to do at two o’clock in the morning. It was after her shift at the gas station—cashier, super fancy gig, right?—ended, so it wasn’t like she could work or do something else with the hours she spent wandering around abandoned buildings and anywhere else that might be haunted.
The road to the old mansion was overgrown and pitted, so they’d only made it partway down it in the car before they had to strike out on foot. A little walking never bothered Madeline, but Drew bothered her. When she’d first broken up with him—because lackluster sex wasn’t enough to make her keep dealing with his bullshit and drama—he’d tried to hook up with Cammie, another of their little society. Cammie wasn’t into him so much, but she wasn’t a great friend to Madeline, so for a bit…they’d had a thing. Madeline thought they still were together, at least as far as she knew. That led Carter, the last of their group, to think he should hit on her.
Nope. No way, no how. Been there, didn’t get a tee shirt. There is no way I am hooking up with anyone else in the society. This is my recreation and curiosity time. I’m not wasting it pretending to feel something for someone.
Because that was what relationships had become to her. Pretend. It didn’t seem anything enough anymore. Like she’d built up a tolerance to relationships and couldn’t get that emotional payoff others enjoyed.
Whatever. Enough introspection. Back to bloody walls.
Supposedly the old mansion had so many ghosts, people had actually died of fear when they tried to stay one night there. One person claimed they knew someone scared so badly, they never spoke again. All in all, it really was sort of the typical urban myth laden kind of thing the group chased down. But this one felt different, somehow. Like her skin was awake, each tiny hair on her arms feeling the breeze in a way they hadn’t before. Distant lightning illuminated the beast of a structure as they approached, making it look like black teeth gnawing at a storm tossed sky.
“Could you keep up? It is going to start raining on us if we don’t get a move on,” Drew complained. Since Madeline was about two feet behind him, his whining tone and stupid words were even more grating than normal.
“You don’t even know if this place has a roof, or if whatever roof it has is even waterproof. Rushing in isn’t a guarantee we’ll stay dry. Not to mention, aren’t we supposed to take in the ambiance around the building as well as within?” she asked.
“Whatever,” he said, shaking his head. His flashlight beam shifted swiftly, blinding her as he shined it right in her eyes.
Dick. Bag of dicks. Limp bag of dicks, Madeline thought spitefully.
“We do need to hurry,” Cammie agreed. “Even if the ceiling isn’t great, it still will provide some protection for the equipment.”
Madeline snorted. If the haunting was real, we shouldn’t need equipment. That was her big beef with their group and other paranormal research teams she’d seen on television. If the ghosts were real, and they were interacting with their plane, why would they need temperature gauges and other stuff to recognize they were here? A good ghost should be like the old horror movies—in your face, pea-spitting, and obviously nasty.
But then again, they did say she was a perverse little beastie.
Even with them rushing her, though, she paused at the grand staircase leading up to the doors to enter the mansion. She couldn’t help it, something drove her to look up at the windows. Well, what was left of the windows. It looked like someone had busted out most of them and some were replaced with bits of plywood, but on the upper floors…some glass remained, reflecting the latest flash of lightning.
A second after the flash, for a brief second, she saw red eyes. Glowing red orbs, set in what looked like the oval of a face, looking right back at her.
Madeline blinked fast as rain began to pelt her. The face was gone, so it could’ve been her imagination. It could’ve been just the lightning messing with her eyes, like the after effect of a camera flash or something entirely natural. But her excitement ramped. Maybe tonight they really would find proof of something Other...

Pure Copper
By Heather Long
Former Marine special forces, Sachi “Copper” James is a chameleon. She thrives on being someone else. Her mission? Identify the rat who sold her team bad intel.

Gabriel Danvers, ex-CIA analyst, is a master of disseminating the details. He wants to enjoy a normal life, retired from the game. His mission? Teach classes.

When Gabriel becomes the target of Copper’s investigation, he re-enters a world of danger and deception--all to claim the passion of the one woman who’s haunted him for years.

READ AN EXCERPT

With eighty students piled into their seats, it would be hard for most professors to keep track of who was who. The sign in sheet always began a rotation in a different part of the hall. Everyone signed in and if their name wasn’t on the sheet—depending on when he passed it around—they didn’t get credit for attending International Relations in Business.

Unfortunately for his students, Gabriel Danvers never forgot a face. He knew which students had their friends sit in or when one of the guys switched his jacket and move surreptitiously to the other side of the room to sign in for a missing classmate and he damn well knew when a woman entered the class who didn’t belong.

Sitting three rows back from the front, her feet propped on the back of another chair, hair in a ponytail and looking about twenty with her cosmetic free face, his lecture hall had an invader. She had her phone in her hand and typed swiftly with her thumbs while he lectured on the pros and cons of the environmental restrictions on European Union business contracts, prosperity and how those factors influenced American businesses in the region.

Though he let his gaze wander over the class making eye contact with the students as he paced back and forth, his awareness of her never diminished. Keeping track of her from the corner of his eye whenever he glanced away told him three things.

She wasn’t one of his usual students or shills—she never bothered to sign the sheet.

She took copious notes, but she was also snapping pictures.

She wanted something from him.

Call it instinct or a sixth sense, but he’d always had a way of looking at scattered facts and identifying a pattern. Her attention was on him, not the material, and her focus belied her casual attitude. She watched without looking, and the weight of her attention proved a provocative allure to his senses.

Whatever she wanted, he looked forward to discovering. His body stirred and he ignored the bolt of lust. No idea who she is, and fucking students is not on the syllabus. The thought came out of nowhere and he coughed once to clear his throat. The corner of her pale pink decorated mouth curved upward. Amusement gleamed in her pale, pale green eyes.

The little vixen knew exactly what she was doing to him. Pausing at the desk, he leaned against it and stretched his legs. Two could play that game, he kept the lecture going as he braced his legs. The urge to ease his stiffening cock to one side grew more profound, but he focused on her. Memorizing her face.
He was damn good with faces.

The deep tan of her skin reminded him of a dark coffee with a sweet cream. Enticing image aside, she had a perfectly balanced and asymmetrical face, but he couldn’t place her origins. Not easily. A faint tilt to her eyes, high cheek bones and a deliciously sensuous mouth…

“So here’s your assignment,” he said, finishing his lecture and dragging his attention away from the siren summoning him in the third row. Ignoring the groans, he used his thumb to point at the board behind him. “Six companies are listed there—three are European Union based and three are U.S. based. Using the lecture and your materials, not only do you need to identify which is which—I want you to identify who is in violation of those restrictions and what are the ramifications for the upcoming Conference on International Commerce.”

The groans increased in volume, and he smiled. They really should learn he didn’t mention items, places or events if they weren’t important.

“Any questions?” Oddly, no hands went up. His gaze collided with the goddess in the third row and she made no attempt to disguise her continued amusement. Another minute dragged on and the class didn’t ask any questions so he clapped his hands together and said, “I’ll see you next week. Don’t forget my office hours if you have questions.”

Would she stay? Or would she go?

Swinging around the desk, he gathered his notes and the papers the class handed in at the beginning. He annoyed them by requiring print copies rather than digital submissions. The horror of figuring out how to use control-P on their computers must have been a challenge.

Warm vanilla sugar teased his nose. She stayed. Glancing from the papers, he found her standing just three feet away, directly across the desk. How sturdy was the construction of the desk? It wouldn’t take him anytime at all to clear it.

Student. Red. Fucking. Light. Intellect versus instinct. She looked young, with an almost fresh scrubbed innocence about her—but those eyes weren’t innocent and harbored far too much hidden emotion as though she’d seen hell and back.

Locking gazes, he considered all the things he wanted to say.
Then reconsidered and kept it professional, “Auditing?”

Laughter, low and throaty, and a lot like warm bourbon on an icy cold evening rolled from her. “No, I just wanted to check out the hot teacher.” She winked, then pivoted and strolled out of his wet dreams…

Strolled?

More like sauntered. Checking his libido, he locked his gaze on the way her hips swayed in those skin tight denim jeans. He knew that walk. Had been hunting for it for two years…

“Hey,” he called, shoving the papers into his backpack and zipping it closed. He crossed the room in four strides to catch her. She didn’t slow down, but having her in his sights for the first time since Nigeria, no way in hell was he letting her walk away.

What the hell was she doing in his classroom?

“Hey,” he said again, catching her elbow and turning her into another empty lecture hall and closing the door to block the noise from the hall. “Where are you running off to?”

Lips pursed, she gave the closed door a glance. “I wasn’t running anywhere.” If her looks hadn’t already captivated him, the hot, buttered rum quality of her voice would have taken him hostage. His libido went into revolt and his cock stiffened to full attention.

His body didn’t give one good damn whether she was a student or not.

Definitely not a student. She didn’t hold herself in any manner as a subordinate or as a student would seeking approval. He’d had a few come on to them, their sloppy, over the top attempts were porn movie quality and he didn’t screw kids. Miss Walking Sex on a Stick was definitely a woman. “Good,” he said, remembering he actually needed to talk. “How do you feel about coffee?”

“Well I never kick it out of bed.” She folded her arms and the placement tightened her sweater over her breasts. A handful each, but he didn’t miss the tension in her shoulders or the way she braced her feet.

She’s ready for a fight if she has to. Probably didn’t help that he was looming over her. Taking a step back, he leaned against the door. No, he wasn’t demanding but he didn’t want her running away again either.

Curiosity flared in her eyes. Oh, had he intrigued her?

“Good to know,” he needed to jumpstart the blood flow back to his brain. “I know a great place on the other side of campus. It’s quiet. Let me buy you a cup?”

Surprise rippled across the surface of her eyes. “Do you often ask students out for coffee?” Was that a note of disappointment creeping into her voice?
“Not at all. But then you’re not a student.”

“You sound certain.” Her chin lifted, and if he were a betting man, he’d peg her for another move to distract him. The action revealed the slender column of her throat and added to the air of vulnerability around her.

Keeping his gaze on her eyes, he trusted his instincts. Nothing about her was as it appeared—except she was fucking gorgeous and intrigued him on every level.

“You wanted to check out the hot teacher. How about a closer look?” He dropped the backpack and took a step toward her.

Eyebrows raised, she met him step for step until they were breast to chest and he kept his hands to himself though they itched follow the shape of those lovely hips. Maintaining a fist hold grip on his restraint, he took a deep breath of her heady vanilla scent. He’d never been a fan of sweets.

However, when Dara meets Lynwood, the call to mate might drown out logic altogether.

Excerpt from Odd Wolf:

“Look, sweetheart? We both know I’m awake and you’re in control, but could you spare a drink of water? Because my mouth tastes like blood and is dry, and the dripping I can hear isn’t helping any.” There, his voice didn’t betray his illogical reaction to her, or at least he hoped it didn’t.
“You’re hardly in a position to request favors.”  Her voice seemed to strip him bare, the acid in her tone actually painful to him for some reason.
A bright light shone on his face and he blinked, blinded. Trying to turn away from it didn’t help since she’d duct taped him to a damned chair. “I realize that. Again, you’ve got all the cards, sweetheart. I haven’t fought against you, not even a little…and I didn’t ask you to let me go.” He didn’t ask, but he worked to free himself. It wasn’t his first time getting taped up, so he knew patience would better serve him than panicked tugging at his restraints.
The light winked out, leaving a sheen of red with a brilliant white spot burned on the back of his eyeballs. Though he couldn’t see her, he heard her movement moments before her hand cupped the back of his head. “Drink, then.”
He couldn’t, leaving it to dribble down his chin before he managed to control himself to the point of swallowing. Her touch—the feel of her fingertips in his hair so near his scalp—scraped him to the core. There was something about this female…
The untainted water proved cool and refreshing as it trickled down his dry throat. Her nearness lasted a few seconds longer before she vanished again, and he couldn’t track her in the darkness. She was soundless in her movements, but perhaps she was off to his left a little.
“You said your name was Lynwood…” The sound of her words came from his right and he snapped toward direction. But then he heard her breathing, as if she stood right behind him. The conflicting guesses at her location left his wolf spinning, panicking past the hypnotic sound of her voice.
“Yes,” he said. The man worked to still and calm the beast, forcing instinct down in favor of calm logic. “My name is Lynwood Pierce and I understand that I’ve trespassed on your turf, but—”
Her breath washed over him when she spoke, her face so close he could practically feel her lips move with her words. “There aren’t any buts, Lynwood, you trespassed.”
Swallowing hard, he bit his lip. The temptation to lean forward and capture her lips shivered through him, a need almost as important as breathing. Again, the man worked to overrule the wolf so he could speak. “You’re right, of course, sweetheart.”
Her palm met his cheek with a resounding slap. “Stop calling me that. I’m Alpha and will be addressed as such.”
“Fine, Alpha Sweetheart, I’m sorry I upset you with my presence.”
